Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide analogue derived from the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) fragment 4-7, with the addition of a Pro-Gly-Pro C-terminal tripeptide sequence that confers enhanced metabolic stability and prolonged biological activity relative to the native ACTH fragment. Originally developed by the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Semax has been extensively investigated in preclinical research examining central nervous system function and neuroprotective mechanisms.

In laboratory and animal model studies, Semax has been investigated for its effects on Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) expression and neurotrophin signaling pathways.
