The identity of Epitalon

Epitalon is a four-residue peptide with the amino acid sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG), written A-E-D-G in single-letter code. The four residues are alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, and glycine, which makes it a small and distinctly acidic molecule.

Why the structure matters when you read a certificate

The structure tells you what a good certificate should confirm. Epitalon has two acidic residues, glutamic acid and aspartic acid, and it has no aromatic residues such as tryptophan, tyrosine, or phenylalanine. With no aromatic residue, it has no strong ultraviolet chromophore at 280 nm, so identity and purity are confirmed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography paired with mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS) rather than by UV absorbance alone.

It also contains no methionine and no cysteine, so the sulfur oxidation impurity that adds roughly sixteen daltons of mass, a common thing to watch for on certificates for other peptides, does not apply here. In practice, the two things the certificate should establish are a measured mass near 390 and the reported purity for that specific lot.
