SS-31, also referenced in the literature as elamipretide or MTP-131, is a synthetic water-soluble tetrapeptide with the sequence D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2. Its alternating aromatic-cationic structure allows it to concentrate in the inner mitochondrial membrane independently of membrane potential, which is why it is widely used as a reference compound in mitochondrial research.

In laboratory settings, SS-31 is studied for its association with cardiolipin, the signature phospholipid of the inner mitochondrial membrane, and for how that interaction relates to cristae architecture, electron transport chain organization and mitochondrial respiration. It appears frequently in in-vitro and preclinical work on oxidative stress, ATP synthesis and models of mitochondrial dysfunction.
